New WHO Report – Burden of disease from environmental noise – 27/04/2011
The World Health Organization has released a new report describing the effect exposure to environmental noise is having on citizens of the EU. It estimates that at least 1 million healthy life years are lost every year from traffic-related noise in the western European countries, including the EU Member States. Sleep disturbance and annoyance related to road traffic noise constitute most of the burden of environmental noise in Western Europe. For more information please see:

Developing New Common European Noise Prediction Methods - 05/04/2011
New noise prediction methods are being developed across Europe. It is likely these methods will be mandatory for use for the third phase of noise mapping in 2017. The new method will, more than likely, support a two level approach; i.e. a simplified method for noise mapping and a detailed method for action planning. Experts in the acoustics community are developing the methods across Europe, representing all Member States. Infrasonic Director, Dr. Eoin King, is participating in the development of these methods.

Articles by Infrasonic Director featured on Science for Environmental Policy – 01/03/2011
Science for Environment Policy provides rapid and easy access to the latest policy-relevant scientific research. Tailored to the needs of policy makers, the service provides short news reports that place new scientific research in a policy context, facilitating direct links between environmental policy and research.
Recently Science for Environmental Policy featured an article by Dr. Eoin King summarizing lessons learned in Ireland from the first phase of noise mapping. For more information please see:

Preparations underway for the second phase of Noise Mapping - 26/10/2010
Preparations are well underway for the second phase of noise mapping in Ireland. The EPA recently organized a workshop/meeting for all noise mapping authorities including the National Roads Authority, Dublin City Council and various Local Authorities. The meeting was held in the Tullamore Court Hotel in Tullamore, Co. Offaly.

Have you checked first phase noise map results?
NOISE is the Noise Observation and Information Service for Europe. The European Environment Agency (EEA) and the European Topic Centre on Land Use and Spatial Information (ETC LUSI) maintain the site on behalf of the Commission. This website contains all of the results from the first phase of noise mapping related to EU Directive 2002/49/EC. For more information see:
